The year 2026 has been declared the Year of Andrzej Wajda by the Senate of the Republic of Poland, marking the 100th anniversary of his birth and the 10th anniversary of his death. This provides an excellent opportunity to re-examine Wajda’s film oeuvre and broader artistic legacy, and to subject it to critical analysis informed by new contexts and contemporary research perspectives.
We invite scholars to participate in a conference devoted to re-visioning Andrzej Wajda. Recent developments in film and media studies encourage to look anew at Wajda’s work and to formulate new research questions that move beyond established interpretations.
We particularly welcome papers addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
- Andrzej Wajda’s films in relation to class issues, women’s history, and the “war of the powerless”
- Andrzej Wajda as a documentary filmmaker / documentary films about Andrzej Wajda
- Andrzej Wajda’s place within the traditions of the visual arts, theatre, and performance
- (In)visible female collaborators and professional partners
- Wajda’s position within the fields of cultural and film hierarchies: reflections on the strengths and limitations of the modernist model of the artist and the milieu that co-produced this paradigm
- The reception of Andrzej Wajda’s films in the international press and within the festival circuit
- Wajda and the canons of Polish, Eastern European and World cinemas
